49ers-Willis Deal Skirts Max on Raises
Fantasy Football Picks – Patrick Willis Dealings
The 49ers and Patrick Willis’ agents found a loophole around the NFL’s “30 percent rule” in extending contracts during this uncapped year. The key is having a second bonus in Year 2 that is guaranteed only for injury. Previously, veterans were limited to only a 30 percent raise, year-over-year.
If the league approves Willis’ contracts, the loophole could provide the framework for stars such as Titans RB Chris Johnson, Colts QB Peyton Manning and Patriots QB Tom Brady to get contract extensions this summer.
Meanwhile, Niners outside linebacker Manny Lawson wants a pay raise and is skipping the team’s voluntary offseason workouts in the effort to create leverage for a long-term deal, according to Comcast Sports.
Lawson, a ’06 first-round pick, has started 40 games but is not an impact player. Lawson, 25, is scheduled to be paid $630,000 in the final year of his rookie contract.
